The theme, “Home for the Holidays,” is intended to communicate that these are homes where real families live, love and play. These are homes designed for real living that demonstrate a delightful balance between aesthetics and livability. The Kiwanis Christmas Tour of Homes is held annually on the first Sunday of December and the money raised is used for college scholarships for three deserving area high school students.
Wanda Westmoreland, organizer of the Tour of Homes committee, is excited about the event this year.
“We are extremely excited and proud to be hosting this annual event. The theme for this year’s tour will be Home for the Holidays! The most amazing component of each of these gorgeous houses is that they exemplify ‘home,’’ Westmoreland said.
“When you enter each doorway, the sights and warm feelings of Christmas are everywhere and when you leave, the spirit of Christmas and genuine hospitality will go with you,” she added.
Four of the five homes are near one another, located in the neighborhoods northwest of Calhoun, past Highway 136, a mile past the Armory. Tickets can be purchased at BB&T Bank, Chamber of Commerce, Harris Arts Center, LGE Credit Union, or from any Kiwanis member. Call 770-548-3323. Tickets for the tour are $20 per person or $35 for two tickets. Tickets purchased the day of the event are $20 each. Tickets may also be purchased the day of the Tour at any of the five homes featured on the Tour this year.
Kiwanis of Calhoun is a part of a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time. They work to improve life for children and families in our community through support and involvement in various projects and programs targeted at helping children, youth, and families. Kiwanis meets at noon each Wednesday at Ryan’s. Guests and prospective members are welcome.
Meet the homeowners and learn about the homes on tour this year.
Charles and Angie Prater’s home, located at 436 Camelot Circle, was built in 1968 by the late John Wayne Hall. This family-friendly home is approximately 6,000 square feet. The Prater family has lived there for 10 years
Jim and Margaret Quist’s home, located at 171 Woodridge Circle, is a lovely two story home built in 1986. The Quist family moved there in 1990. Three renovations have taken place with all the design plans and decorating ideas coming from Margaret. The poolside gazebo and fireplace were additional ideas and designs created by the couple.
Dan and Dar Nix’s home, located at 151 Woodridge Circle, is a traditional two-story brick home that the couple shares with their dog, Gus and big grey cat, Bear. The home features simple construction that highlights the collections and interests of its owners. Also included in the tour will be the potting shed that complements the surrounding garden.
Chip and Sandy Sloan, located at 225 Ridgewood Drive, is a unique house. It began life as a small ranch style home, but after extensive renovations were begun in 2007, this property now consists of the main house, guest-house, barn and pool areas. There are 4 bedrooms, 6 bathrooms, 2 full kitchens, an outdoor kitchen, home theatre and workout room. Each room will feature a different theme in its Christmas décor.
Ted and LaRae Pennel, located at 508 Boulevard Heights in downtown Calhoun, is the fifth home on the tour this year, and is a historic home. Built in 1907, this home was originally named “Rockhurst.” It has been occupied by several prominent Calhoun families through the years. From the stone exterior and wrap-around porch, to the lovely period décor, to the backyard pool and patio with fabulous views of the valley, this home is a feast for the eyes.
