The Imagination Station at the Calhoun Housing Authority hosted its inaugural Soapbox Derby in celebration of Father’s Day on June 16, 2012.

Mary Mays, the Imagination Station Youth Coordinator stated the event featured homemade cars and skilled drivers on the downhill slope of Martin Luther King Street.

Spectators and participants were able to receive free face painting and handouts. Adults received free blood pressure checks provided by Gordon Hospital.

The Calhoun Fire Department provided a fire truck tour and advised the children of fire safety and the Cup of Life Ministries provided drinks and free food.

“The great thing about this event was the gathering of people in the community to come together to have fun and support the students of the Imagination Station,” said Mays.

Some of the participants of the race were: Gaven Johns, Car 11; Myles and Mason Mays, Car 55; Jordan Moore, Car 1; Allie Chase, Car 6; and Jack Chase, Car 5. Other drivers were Jastin Phillips, Montex Omar and Quinton Byrd, Sexton and Hyson Golden, and last but not least, the Ex. Director, Gail Brown with a late entry car.

Special Thanks to the Judges, Wilburn and Preston Aker, Ricky Smith and Belen Reyes.

This event would not have been possible without the gracious generosity of the following: Cash Exchange, First Corinth Christian Church, Allen Chapel AME Church, The Elks Club, Gordon Hospital, Mohawk Industries, Cup of Life Ministries, Gordon County Sheriff’s Department, Calhoun Fire Department, Thomas Funeral Home, Max Brannon Funeral Home, Sonic Drive in, Chick-fil-A, Little Ceasers Pizza, Walter Washington, Billy Thomas, On the Cutting Edge, Kevin Holsombeck, Haley O’Neil, Charlie Allen and Cup of Life Ministries.
