State Sen. Lee Hawkins of Gainesville says his background in health care compels him to run for Congress.

The Republican will seek the 9th District House seat being vacated by nine-term U.S. Rep. Nathan Deal, who is running for Georgia governor in 2010.

After spending most of his life in health care, Hawkins, a 58-year-old Gainesville dentist, says he feels its his place to be a part of federal health care reform.
