Gordon Hospital is hosting a free diabetes screening on Tuesday, November 6, 2012 from 8–10 a.m. Anyone interested in receiving a free screening must register in advance by contacting 706-602-7800, ext. 2305.

“The event will include a free fingerstick blood sugar screening,” said Pam Tucker RN, education director for the hospital. “For the most accurate results, do not eat or drink anything after midnight prior to the screening.”

Nearly one-third of Americans are unaware that they have diabetes. According to Gordon Hospital officials, diabetes is a condition in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin, a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy needed for daily life.

“The cause of diabetes continues to be a mystery, although both genetics and environmental factors such as obesity and lack of exercise appear to play roles,” said Tucker. “Diabetes can lead to serious complications and premature death, but people with diabetes can take steps to control the disease and lower the risk of complications.”

Refreshments will be provided to participants following their screenings.
