The Gordon County Schools system did not make Adequate Yearly Progress according to the preliminary reports released by the Georgia Department of Education this month. Systems across the state are measured in three areas of criteria:
95% test participation on the CRCT or GHSGT
Academic performance on the CRCT or GHSGT
A second indicator of attendance for all elementary and middle school students and the graduation rate for all high school students
Only two of the 11 schools in the Gordon County district did not meet AYP: Sonoraville East Middle School (SEMS) and Gordon Central High School (GCHS).
According to Gordon County Schools’ Director of School Improvement Tracy Wilson, both schools met all AYP requirements except for the Academic Performance criteria of Reading.
“We are in the process of appealing the first preliminary AYP results for Sonoraville East Middle School right now. There is an error in student information (AYP reports are based on students who are enrolled the full aca-demic year) and we would like for the State to come in and take a look at that,” said Wilson.
“Gordon Central High School met all AYP requirements except Reading for 11th grade students. Students who did not pass the GHSGT in the spring, completed summer retests last week, which will count toward their AYP report. We are hoping the results will make a difference,” she said.
Final AYP determinations for the two schools will be released at the end of September.
