Gordon Central High School’s Advanced Placement program continues to expand and to recognize students for their success. Seven students from the Class of 2009 earned AP Scholar Awards in recognition of their exceptional achievement. The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program (AP) provides motivated and academically prepared students with the opportunity to take rigorous college-level courses while still in high school, and to earn college credit, advanced placement, or both for successful performance on the AP Exams. Only about 18 percent of the nearly 1.7 million students worldwide who took AP Exams performed at a sufficiently high level to also earn an AP Scholar Award.

At Gordon Central six students qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. These students are Aumi Brahmbhatt, Ricky Doshi, Belsy Garcia, Taylor Holden, Alan Marvel, and Sarah Welty. Timothy Aldridge qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing three or more AP Exams with grades of 3 or higher. College credit may be awarded for scores of 3 or higher.

“We are extremely proud of these students and their dedication to rigorous academics,” Principal Betty Holland stated. “All of these students are now enrolled in colleges and universities where admissions are competitive and where they will continue to excel. The six AP courses we now offer will expand to ten next year, and we are excited about expanding this very rigorous academic program. Ninety percent of our test-takers earned college credit in 2009, and 100 percent of our calculus students earned credit. These results, along with our rising ACT scores, indicate that Gordon Central continues to meet the needs of all of its students,” Holland concluded.
