A bill sponsored by state Sen. Ross Tolleson would allow local or state government agencies to partner with private developers to build those reservoirs, water treatment plants or even repair leaking pipes. Private firms could recoup their investment through user fees or other customer charges.
The Senate Committee on Natural Resources and the Environment will consider the proposal during a hearing Wednesday. Tolleson leads the committee.
The lawmaker said his legislation could make it cheaper for some communities to build expensive public works projects. Gov. Nathan Deal has said he wants to build reservoirs in Georgia to increase the state's water supply.
