College softball: Calhoun alum Monroe named AAC Pitcher of the Week for third time this season

Reinhardt University softball player Maddie Monroe was named the Appalachian Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week for her play from April 2-8. It marks the eighth time in her career that Monroe has earned the weekly conference honor, including three times this season.

Monroe, a 5-foot-8 junior pitcher from Calhoun made just one appearance last week but pitched a complete-game shutout in Reinhardt’s 3-0 AAC win over Virginia Intermont College.

She allowed no hits over 6 1/3 innings and ended up with a one-hitter in the victory. Monroe struck out 10 and walked one as Virginia Intermont batted just .050 (1-for-20) against her.

Monroe leads the Lady Eagles in almost every statistical pitching category, including appearances (19), innings pitched (120), starts (17), complete games (16), wins (13), shutouts (nine), ERA (1.23), strikeouts (132) and opponents’ batting average (.193). She has a 13-5 record and has walked just 19.

Within the AAC, Monroe ranks first in strikeouts per game (9.90), second in strikeouts, second in ERA, tied for second in wins, third in opponents’ batting average and fifth in innings pitched. On the national level, she is tied for 13th in strikeouts, tied for 22nd in wins, 23rd in ERA and 28th in innings pitched.

Reinhardt has a 25-8 overall record and is 9-1 in the AAC. The Lady Eagles are at Montreat College for a conference doubleheader on Monday. The first contest is scheduled for 2 p.m. in Montreat, N.C.
