Calhoun Utilities is celebrating Public Power Week during October 7 thru 13, along with more than 2,000 other electric utilities that collectively provide electricity on a not-for-profit basis to 46 million Americans.

“Public Power Week is a chance for Calhoun Utilities to articulate why public power works in Calhoun,” Calhoun Mayor Jimmy Palmer said. “ We are absolutely dedicated to providing top-notch service and the lowest rates possible.”

Public Power Week is a national annual event sponsored in conjunction with the American Public Power Association (APPA) in Washington, D.C.

“We are proud to have served Calhoun for over 100 years,” Palmer said. “We strive to provide reliable service and contribute to the community’s economic vitality, so it’s important for us to let our customers know that Calhoun Utilities is a valuable local resource.”

Calhoun Utilities was created in 1898 with the implementation of water services. Electric service was established in 1907.

Today Calhoun water, waste water, telecommunications and electric systems have 120 employees, 700 miles of water lines and 231 miles of electric distribution and secondary lines as well as a broad spectrum of telecommunications services. The combined utility serves approximately 22,000 residential, commercial and industrial utility customers.

“We know how important electricity, as well as water, is for the people of Calhoun. We will continue to deliver these essential resources at low cost, reliably, safely and with special attention to the environment,” Palmer said.
