Beginning with the 2011-2012 school year, schools all across Georgia have a mandated comprehensive, health-related physical fitness and activity assessment.

In the past, fitness testing was optional. However, the Georgia Department of Education now mandates schools to implement the FitnessGram in all physical education classes.

Students at Calhoun Elementary have been working year round to meet the standards of the FitnessGram assessment. While third grade students are only assessed in their body composition, all fourth and fifth grade students must be assessed in all of the mandated components of the program.

The mandated components include body composition, curl ups, push-ups, sit and reach, and mile run. Individual student reports are provided to the parent/guardian of the student assessed.

All fourth and fifth grade students who meet the standard for all of the mandated components will receive a certificate at the end of the year awards program.

FitnessGram can be used by students to help them in personal fitness programming, by teachers to determine student needs, help to guide students in program planning, and by parents to understand their child’s needs to and help the child plan a program of physical activity. Calhoun Elementary is proud of the successes of our students as they strive to get healthy.
