CALHOUN — Long-serving Calhoun City Council member Ray Denmon was defeated by Matt Barton in Tuesday’s voting that saw less than 16 percent of eligible voters turn out.

Barton, who had been serving on the Calhoun City School Board, outpolled Denmon 398-333 in Tuesday’s voting for the Post 3 seat.

David Hammond, the incumbent in City Council Post 4, was unopposed for re-election.

In the Calhoun City School Board election, incumbent Eddie Hall was re-elected to the Post 3 seat, outpolling challenger Chuck Faulkner 450-265.

Incumbents Amy M. Atkinson (Post 1) and Rhoda Washington (Post 2) were unopposed.

Calhoun, Fairmount and Resaca held municipal elections Tuesday. There were no countywide issues on the ballot, which may have held down the turnout, said Shea Hicks, Gordon County elections supervisor.

“It’s disappointing, but in races like this, a lot of people don’t normally come out,” Hicks said Tuesday night. “People don’t take voting as seriously as they should.”

In Fairmount, Teru “Teddy” Lapaquette and Max Mulkey are headed for a Dec. 1 runoff after neither got a majority of the vote in the three-way race for the Post 1 City Council seat.

Mulkey received 54 votes to Lapaquette’s 40 in Tuesday’s balloting. Third-place finisher Jerry Jeffery Crook got 22 votes.

Jim Dodd was unopposed for Fairmount City Council Post 3.

Charles E. Austin won a three-way race for the Post 3 seat on the Resaca Town Council, drawing 80 votes to 24 for Jerry Veasey and seven for incumbent Alex Rosier.

In the race for Resaca Town Council Post 4, which was open because of the retirement of long-time Councilwoman Julia Baker, Mitch Reed defeated former Town Councilman Johnny Brown 90-20.
