Sonoraville Elementary School students along with the creative eye of Linda Daughtry, recently created a mural titled “Strenght in Every Student” to grace the halls of the school. Daughtry along with 626 students in grades K – 5th painted three large boards to comprise the portrait of the 8 X 12 Phoenix. Students painted strokes on the background or created their own feather with the help of Daughtry who is a retired art teacher. SES Principal Dr. Elizabeth Anderson contacted Daughtry to assis the students with the art work. Daughtry taught art for 39 years at seven elementary schools and four high schools, the last nine of which were at Oakland Elementary in Ellijay, Ga. “I have always taught somebody,” said Daughtry. “My only sibling was five years younger than me. He was always my student. In my teen years I taught horseback riding at summer camp. When I told my parents that I was majoring in art in college, they insisted that I get a teaching certificate. I assured them that I would never teach. I wanted to be a commercial artist. After graduation and job searching, I decided to take a teaching job in Indiana. I loved the students and teaching. The rest is history.”
