The Calhoun Middle School softball team recently won the region championship for the third consecutive year.

The Lady Jackets beat Cass and Woodland in a double header on Oct. 8 to claim the title.

Against Cass in the first game, eighth grade pitcher Alyssa Shawgo allowed only one hit from the mound and went 3-for-3 at the plate in the 5-1 victory. Tyalro Kelly went 2-for-3 in the game.

After a short break, Calhoun then faced Woodland in the second game and got the win behind a great offensive and defensive performance by Payton Greeson. Greeson went 2-for-3 at the plate and made several key plays by knocking the ball down and not letting it get behind her so runs could score.

They had so much eye-black on you could only tell who each girl was by their number, but they had their game faces on and were ready to play,” said Guess. “You could tell by looking into their eyes they knew what they had to do to win the game. They went out and played their hearts out.”

The Lady Jackets will see the departure of four eighth graders: Shawgo, Wimberly Roe, Katelin West, and Greeson, Samantha Stewart.

Shawgo was Calhoun’s ace and she did not allow an earned run all season. She also compiled a .655 batting average.

“Alyssa is a great girl to coach,” said CMS Assistant Coach Jessica Guess. “She listens to what you have to say, and she is always there to help anyone if they need it.”

Shawgo threw a no hitter against Adairsville earlier in the season. Afterward she was awarded the game ball but according to Guess she turned it down because she said she wasn’t worthy of it after walking two in the game.

Later she pitched a perfect game against Cartersville. Shawgo went 29-0 during her career at CMS.

Roe hit .483 this season and knocked out one home run against Cass. She became the first CMS player to hit a 3-run homer. She played excellent defense at third, committing zero errors.

Seventh grader Katelyn James hit .520 on the season. She had two homeruns.

The rest of the starting varsity team included seventh graders Peyton Clark, Taylor Kelly, Kyleigh Carney, Lexus King, and sixth grader Blair Robinson.

Tony Lindsey is the CMS head coach.
