The Friends of the Vann House will sponsor a special “blacksmith as a toolmaker” seminar at the Vann House Saturday, Sept. 17. Master blacksmith Max Williams, who has demonstrated his skills during Vann House Days for several years, will share his knowledge with participants during this unique workshop. Class will start at 8:30 a.m. and last until 4 p.m.

Those who enroll in the class will learn how to forge, grind, sharpen and heat treat various types of tool steel. This tool steel is used to make chisels, draw knives, gouges, inshaves and scorps for woodworking projects. Also included will be several methods for making and attaching handles to the tools. The seminar is for all levels of expertise.

The seminar will consist of three hours of classroom instruction and three hours of forge demonstrations. Students must furnish their own safety glasses: this is mandatory.

The cost of the class, including materials, is $45 and space is limited to 30 students. Students must be at least 14 years of age to participate. Register now to guarantee your spot. If enough people do not register, the class will be canceled. For more information, and to register, call the Vann House Historic Site at 706-695-2598. The Vann House is located three miles west of Chatsworth on Ga. Highway 225.
