The Lady Jackets defeated Cass Middle School 33-14 at Woodland to complete another perfect season. Over the past five years, Calhoun is 83-1 overall.
“It was a repeating story,” said CMS coach Diane Smith. “These girls have won all their games and this one was another ‘stroll in the parl.’”
Both Calhoun and Cass battled back-and-forth early, with the Lady Jackets taking a 6-4 lead after the first quarter.
The Calhoun defense stepped up in the second quarter, holding Cass to just two points, while the offense scored eight for a 14-6 lead.
The Lady Jackets cruised in the second half, going up 27-10 after three quarters and taking a 19 point lead as the final buzzer sounded.
The win was a complete team effort for Calhoun as five players scored four or more points.
“There is no way to single out one or two players,” said Smith. “It was a balanced performance from all the girls and they gave an outstanding effort to bring home the championship trophy again.”
Callie Davis led the Calhoun charge with eight points, while adding five rebounds. Tamia Wade scored seven points and grabbed a team high eight rebounds.
Sydnie Parker led the team with four steals, while also adding four points. Blair Spector and Ella Holden also netted four points each. Spector added two steals.
Kyleigh Carney led the Lady Jackets with eight assists. She also netted two points and grabbed five rebounds. Laura Carter added two points and six rebounds.
Smith, whose JV team also won the championship earlier on Saturday, has watched her teams sweep the B.G.M.S.A.A. tourney for the second consecutive year and for the third time in the last four years.
“The two wins rank right up there with the best of them in my career,” said Smith. “To win both championships for the second consecutive year is a thrill for the girls, their parents and this coach.”
