Tomorrow marks mine and King George’s 15th anniversary. Many people we know betted this day would never happen. Probably with good reason.

We were talking about our upcoming anniversary last night and how the 25th anniversary is silver and 50th is golden. He asked what the 15th was and I simply said “pretty darn good.”

We have birthed three great girls, and taken in two equally wonderful ones. One has already left the nest and next year we will have a high school senior. In 12 more years, our last one will be a senior – and yes, we are looking forward to having a life together with grown children. We talk and plan what we will do when that happens. First on the list: change the locks.

We’ve landed dream jobs and bought our dream house.

A wonderful story about our house: we lived in a little single wide trailer next door to our current home. George took me next door one day in that first year of marriage and told me we would live in that house one day. I laughed. I didn’t believe we could have that picture perfect place. But like most promises he’s made, he kept it.

The trials and tribulations have brought us closer and reminded us that we work better as a team. Teamwork is probably our strongest quality as a couple. We’ve also learned to cut ties with some negatives that were hurting us a couple.

I don’t claim to be a marriage expert, but I think if couples work together more than against each other, they have a pretty good chance of recovering from the “bad stuff.” Trust me, if you stay mar-ried past your honeymoon, you will hit “bad stuff” –whether its loss of a job, an accident or illness, or some other event that you don’t think you can face. I, against conventional wisdom, think it’s okay to go to bed angry, if you are like me and generally start fights when you are tired.

We are celebrating this occasion with something that is a bit reminiscent of how we used to fight and argue before we practiced teamwork.

King George is taking me to see “Clash of the Titans.”
